Laptops For Luddites Wednesday 29th of September 2010 London, England: 16:00 I've been fettling my laptop. It was running Vista, an unmitigated cock-up of an operating system. I backed up everything, and now I'm running TinyXP, a streamlined sports car version of Windows XP. I'm such a Luddite in some ways. Every time I install a new windows, I go round taking out all the animations, transparencies, and skins, making the thing look pretty much like good old Windows 98. Now she's running amazingly fast, my quickest computer ever. And I've been installing less ridiculously old music software. Been working on my tunes too. 'Tiny Little Fingers' is sounding so sweet, and I've recorded a cover of 'Only You' the Yazoo/Flying Pickets classic. It's a strange tune. No-one seems to ask for it, but everyone enjoys me playing it. Still can't get everything properly synced up for recording, so I just record everything into the Zoom H4, then drag the files over onto the laptop. It's a bit more fiddly, but everything ends up in time with everything else. This is a good thing. Can't stand trying to work out whether to nudge everything left or right. You know things are out of time, but you dunno if they're early of late. This is a bad thing. Recording onto the H4 has the added advantage you can record *anywhere*. This is also a good thing.
