The River Of Dogs
Tuesday 22nd of September 2009
Loddon, Norfolk Broads, England: 8:00
Loddon sits at the navigable end of the river cley, looking unnaturally pretty. It maybe won't surprise you to hear I fixed the tiny puncture with a few dabs of superglue, but it's surprising how well it works. And surprising that I haven't still got a kayak stuck to my back. The river drifts past houses, boatyards, and out into wide open countryside.

Stop at a grassy beach to do some capsize training, and have a swim. Capsizing is fine, you just flip her over, beach across, and spin round, preferably with your feet pointing downwards. Use your hands to get over to the floating oar. No probs.

Can't get out of my trunks into my dry(er) shorts, cause dog walkers keep walking by. The canines keep jumping out into the river to fetch sticks, and then shake off the damp into my boat. There's a rope swing draping down from a tree, but I figure this is a beach frequented mainly by mutts.
